Is the INCO 1169/2011 nutritional labeling mandatory?
The European Food Safety and Consumer Product Safety Regulation (FSC) No. 1169/2011, published in 2011 and adopted in France in 2016, aimed to modernize and harmonize the labeling of all foodstuffs in Europe. This document compiles the various regulatory texts relating to labeling within the European Union. Among the essential information is a list of mandatory information, designed to better inform consumers.
What information is mandatory?
This nutritional labeling is now mandatory for all food manufacturers (solid products, liquids, food supplements, etc.).
All pre-packaged foodstuffs must, according to INCO regulation no. 1169-2011, bear the following mandatory information:
- The sales name
- The list of ingredients
- Allergens
- The quantity of certain ingredients or categories of ingredients (if applicable)
- The net quantity
- The use-by date or minimum durability date
- Specific storage and/or usage conditions (if applicable)
- The name or company name and address of the operator
- Country of origin or place of provenance (if applicable)
- Instructions for use (when their absence prevents proper use of the product)
- Alcohol by volume (for drinks with an alcohol content exceeding 1.2%)
- The nutrition declaration
